Batman: Arkham City to feature Penguin as a villain

Rocksteady Studios rep Dax Ginn confirms in an interview that the classic Batman villain, Penguin, will play a prominent role in Batman: Arkham City.

Batman: Arkham City is going to have stiffer competition this year than its 2009 predecessor did when the end of year awards and round-ups start to make the rounds in December and beyond. All reports indicate that it’s in good shape for a strong showing, however. The release date is October 18, square in the middle of the holiday smorgasbord. Bats will be strolling around in a more open world this time too, with a section of Gotham City walled off and turned into an open air prison where the worst of the worst have built a twisted society for themselves. Hugo Strange, Two-Face, The Joker and Catwoman will all feature prominently into the story, but developer Rocksteady Studios has confirmed another fan-favorite villain will be putting in an appearance, someone who didn’t show up in the last game: Penguin.

“The way that Penguin has always been portrayed is as quite an aristocratic, well-spoken gentleman who’s got these twisted delusions of grandeur,” Rocksteady spokesperson Dax Ginn said in an interview that appeared in the Sunday edition of Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper (viaArkhamCity.co.uk). “So we’ve made him a really horrible, nasty piece of work – but still with the delusion of grandeur. He dresses well, but in a poor taste, and we’ve made him this brutish, brutal guy but also key into collection fascination that hes had through out the years.”

In the game — and this feels like it strays into light spoiler territory, so proceed at your own risk — players will meet Penguin after Batman completes a Riddler puzzle. The villain’s first act is apparently to task his cronies with killing off the Caped Crusader, a task they obviously aren’t going to be able to complete, though presumably not for lack of trying. It seems that old Oswald Cobblepot — Penguin’s human name, for the non-comics folk among you — is every bit the collector in Arkham City that he’s always been, and he arms his soldiers well as a result.

“Penguin’s faction is much more about the collection that he has within his museum of all sorts of things,” Ginn said. “But one of those things he collects is heavily artillery. So when you come up against his thugs in the street they are all going to have seriously heavy weapons and that develops throughout the game as well.”

Penguin’s starting to sound like a real pain in the rear. We wouldn’t have it any other way. You can get your first look at the game’s take on Cobblepot in the image above.
